Heartland Human Care Services (HHCS) is a 136-year old 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that partners with, serves, and advocates on behalf of people and communities that have been systemically marginalized, oppressed, and excluded. We are a CARF-accredited organization with a budget of $72 million (FY24) and 575 dedicated staff serving more than 50,000 people each year. HHCS’ nearly 40 programs are centered on affordable and supportive housing, family and community support, employment opportunities, benefits and entitlements, safety from human trafficking and gender-based violence, resettlement, mental health treatment, shelter and long-term placement for youth and substance use treatment referral services.

 About the Positions: 

Operations Data Management Intern 

Based on the intern’s interest, there are multiple projects to choose from that are focused on using and learning project management skills to analyze data sets for data cleaning, mapping data collection processes and optimizing communication/storage platforms.

Based on the intern’s interest, capstone project can include research to develop a template for reporting on data system pilot projects, or research on best practices for a data quality management plan framework.

The ideal candidate for the Operations Data Management Intern exhibits:

  • Intermediate knowledge of Excel for basic analysis of data sets

  • Familiarity with process mapping

  • Foundational knowledge of project management

Fund Development Intern 

Private Foundation Prospect Research, Grant Proposal Writing and Project Management Support for Urban Farm.

Capstone project for the second intern will center on private fund development activities in support of HHCS programs. These activities include prospecting, reviewing and submission to Development team and program leaders for decision to pursue; private foundation grant writing and project management in support of HHCS Chicago FarmWorks, an urban farm, producing hyper-local organic food for underserved disenfranchised communities.

The ideal candidate for the Fund Development Intern exhibits:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills (communication, collaboration and receptiveness)

  • Technical proficiency, including software experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Attention to detail and exceptional time management in meeting project deadlines

 Time Commitment: 

Up to 35 hours/week plus 5 hours/week of professional development activities

$17.50/hr compensation

 Location of Internship: 

95% Remote and 5% Onsite at

HHCS Headquarters: 4822 N. Broadway Street, Chicago, IL 60640
